Policies, Standards and Procedures

Policies

The success or failure of an entrepreneurship is, for the most part, directly related to the guidelines or action lines followed by the entrepreneur of the business.

These guidelines or action lines represent the true sense of the company’s POLICIES. We highlight ‘true sense’ because, too often, we hear the misuse of this term from the top management. They speak of "policies" when in fact what they are referring to are "standards" or "procedures".

POLICIES characterize the company and, when formalized, make clear the desired relationship to all business stakeholders.

The transparency of POLICIES enables, among other benefits, the clear development of the strategic objectives and the consequent achievement of expected results.

Standards

STANDARDS are the management tools to communicate – and make clear - to the business areas or processes, the "form" or "orders" of how to comply with the POLICIES.

Documented STANDARDS will ensure compliance with policies at all hierarchy levels and give the necessary support to perform the procedures.

Procedures

They are the implementation patterns adopted in compliance with the standards.

This is the most dynamic part of this tripod, because policies and standards do not change very often. Procedures, however, must always be open to receive suggestions that end up resulting in the highly demanded operational continuous improvements.

The formalization of procedures provides many benefits to management, including:

  • Predictability of the expected result of a process - standardization
  • Increased security in internal controls of the organization and transparency of transactions and management
